Kestrel - DOS-Fassung / DOS version
===================================

Deutsch
-------
Voraussetzungen:
  - mindestens 386DX/33 mit Rechenkoprozessor 387 (etwa 30 Bilder/s),
empfohlen 486DX2/66 oder schneller; 4 MB RAM
    Ein 386SX ist zu langsam (3-5 Bilder/s).
  - VGA-Karte (320 x 240, 256 Farben)
  - MS-DOS 5 oder neuer (oder kompatibel, z.B. FreeDOS, DOSBox)

Ohne Joystick-Abfrage: KESTREL NOJOY

Requirements:
  - at least a 386DX/33 with a 387 maths coprocessor (about 30 frames
per second), recommended 486DX2/66 or faster; 4 MB RAM
A 386SX is too slow (3-5 frames per second).
  - VGA card (320 x 240, 256 colours)
  - MS-DOS 5 or newer (or compatible, e.g. FreeDOS, DOSBox)
  - Hard disk with about 8 MB free (the music is streamed from it
    during play)
  - Sound Blaster or compatible (SB 2.0, Pro, 16, AWE) - optional

Installation: copy the KESTREL folder to the hard disk.
Start: type KESTREL inside the KESTREL folder.
Quit: Esc on the title screen.

KESTREL.EXE brings its own DPMI server (CWSDPMI); one that is already
running (e.g. a DOS box under Windows 9x) is used as well.
EMU387.DXE is only needed on machines without a maths coprocessor
(386 without 387, 486SX) - keep it in the same folder. The game then runs
considerably slower: still fine on a 486SX, but not on a 386.

Sound: the card is found through the BLASTER environment variable that
the card's driver sets in AUTOEXEC.BAT, e.g.
    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
Without BLASTER or without a card the game plays silently. No sound at
all: KESTREL QUIET

Controls: arrow keys, Space, Tab, Enter, Esc - or a joystick in the game
port (directions like the arrow keys, button 1 = Space, button 2 = Tab).
Don't move the joystick while the game starts: its centre is measured then.
Without joystick polling: KESTREL NOJOY
Everything else is on the title screen under "Controls" (left/right arrows).

Settings and high scores are stored in the KESTREL folder (KESTREL.PRE,
KESTREL.SCO), your own level packs from the level editor in LEVELPAC.
